Lili Bordan – Joan

Lili began studying theater in New York under the mentorship of teacher Susan Batson and at Sarah Lawrence College, but she started her film and stage career in Budapest and Prague.  Lili continues to work in Europe, with recurring roles on BBC series such as Silent Witness and Robin Hood, and leads in features such the Danish/ Hungarian co-production Egill the Last Pagan and British/ French feature Two Days in the Smoke, both set for world-wide theatrical release next fall. US credits include films Cherry. (Warner Brothers Ent.)  A Love Affair of Sorts (Periscope Ent.), which she co-wrote, guest-spots on ER (NBC), Law and Order: SVU (NBC) The River (ABC), and the female lead in Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome (SyFy).   Lili Bordan played Marie, the French nanny in Moth Theatre’s production of The Blue Room for which she won a Scenie Award for best actress in Southern California.  She’s grateful tonight to be part of her second play on this wonderful stage.

Ryan Surratt - Mr. A

Ryan holds dual degrees from the University of Southern California schools of Film and Business. He began his studies in the art of acting at the age of 14 at the South Orange County School of the Arts. He serves as Artistic Director of The Rydemption Theater Company which is a subsidiary of his production company Rydemption Entertainment. Ryan's recent work was supporting Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl in "The Ugly Truth" through Sony Pictures and also playing Eddie in the remake of the film "FAME" for MGM. He is currently directing a film starring himself and John Heard entitled “Buoyancy”.

Liz Guest - Charlie

She appeared at age 8 in her father's television series "USA High" as a wedding guest, dissolving in tears as she watched her father's character get married, thus stealing the already emotional scene from the seasoned acting 'grownups'.   She then started studying at a very young age at the Lee Strasberg Theatrical Institute in Los Angeles. Numerous school plays followed her five years at Strasberg.  Upright Citizens Brigade is her improv home now. She was accepted into the highly selective and prestigious B.F.A acting program at the University of Southern California, and after a year decided to switch her major to Cinema to study something she had not studied before.  She made multiple short films during this time, starring in many shorts as well as writing and directing her own.  One of her first films was a documentary about MOTH.  During her college years, she was cast in a three episode arc as David Duchovny's student on "Californication". She also starred in the short film "Nothing" directed by respected visual artist, Tracey Snelling, which was selected to screen as part of the 'Acting the Part' program in the 55th San Francisco International Film Festival in May 2012 and in festivals all over the world. During her final year at USC she wrote her second feature that recently made it into the final round for the Sundance Screenwriting Lab 2013.  Her most recent project is the feature film "Kill Her, Not Me" a thriller in which she stars (and survives) in the leading role.

Certain nights will feature a screening of the award winning short film "Buoyancy" starring John Heard and directed by Ryan Surratt

Congratulations to Moth Member Scoot McNairy for his role in Ben Affleck's "ARGO"

2012 might end up being remembered as the year of Scoot McNairy. The actor, perhaps best known for producing and starring in the 2007 indie hit “In Search of a Midnight Kiss,” will be seen on screen in three highly anticipated films before the end of this year.

First up is “Argo,” premiering at the Toronto Film Festival Sept. 7 before hitting American screens Oct. 12. Ben Affleck produced, directed, and stars in the film based on the incredible true story of CIA operatives who pretend to be filmmakers in order to extract six Americans from Iran during the 1979 hostage crisis. McNairy portrays Joseph Stafford, one of the six, who is resistant to the plan designed by Affleck’s agent.

But first, McNairy will be seen in a major role opposite Brad Pitt in “Killing Them Softly,” opening Sept. 21, and later this year in Gus Van Sant’s new drama “Promised Land.” It’s a great payoff for the journeyman actor.

“I’ve been very, very fortunate, especially in the last year, having pushed really hard over the last 10 years,” says McNairy. “I’ve just been keeping my head down and trying to focus on the work. But I’ve loved every minute of it.”

How did you land your role in “Argo”?
Scoot McNairy: I met with Lora Kennedy, the casting director. And then I got a call to come back and meet with Ben. I think he just wanted to read with me and make sure I wasn’t a loose cannon. He’s an amazing director. He gives us a lot of room to play and he’s so smart. I had such a good time working with him, both as a director and an actor.

Is it true you did an Axe body spray commercial with him in 2006?
McNairy: (Laughing) I did! It was a commercial that aired in Europe. And when I went into casting for “Argo,” I read and did my thing, and as I was leaving I turned back and said, “Oh yeah, Axe deodorant.” He was like, “No way, that was you!” I don’t know if it helped my odds at all.

What sort of research did you do to prepare for your role?
McNairy: I didn’t know that much about the story going into it. They gave us a huge box of research, down to movies that were big during that time period and books on Khomeini and The Shah. For three weeks leading up to shooting, we were immersed in educating ourselves not only on the scenario, but also the time period. Also, they put the actors playing the escaped hostages in a house for five days to live together, so we all got to know each other really well.

You also have a large role opposite Brad Pitt in “Killing Them Softly,” opening this month. Was that also an audition situation?
McNairy: Yeah. The writer/director, Andrew Dominik, hadn’t seen me in anything. He was like, “Who are you? Where did you come from?” Andrew really took a risk casting me in such a great role. I’m very indebted to him. I’ve been up for studio films before where they basically said, “Who? No, get me a bigger name.”

And you’ll be appearing in Gus Van Sant’s “Promised Land” later this year. What can you tell us about that?
McNairy: It’s an amazing script by Matt Damon and John Krasinski about fracking in the oil and gas industry. Matt plays a guy who comes to a small town to close all the land leases, and I play one of the farmers who is hesitant to sign [because] he doesn’t want to give up his land.

You’re also an accomplished producer. How did you get involved in that?
McNairy: I was out here, struggling to get the roles I wanted, so I opened a production company to start making films that I wouldn’t normally get cast in and that I wanted to see. Producing was just an extension of my love for storytelling. I love all aspects of it—directing, producing, acting, writing, the whole thing. So it was an avenue that popped up based on the fact I was looking for work and no one would hire me on the movies I wanted to make. So I started to make them myself.

I know you like getting on stage, too. When was the last time you were able to do a play?
McNairy: I work with a theater company called The Moth Theatre. John Markland, who’s my acting coach, started that theater and the last play I was in there was Sam Shepard’s “Geography of a Horse Dreamer.” It was a great time. It was an all-male cast, so every rehearsal was like a clubhouse.

There’s a play John wrote called “Americano” that I saw and just fell in love with it. We’re developing that into a screenplay now.

Killing Them Softly" Premiere - 65th Annual Cannes Film Festival
Big Congratulations to Moth Member SCOOT MCNAIRY for being cast in the Brad Pitt Produced "KILLING THEM SOFTLY" starring Brad Pitt, Scoot McNairy, Ray Liotta, & James Gandolfini.

Scoot McNairy is on a hell of a run at the moment. The star of "In Search Of A Midnight Kiss" finally turned heads in a big way with Gareth Edwards' 2010 low-budget spectacular "Monsters," and ever since then he's been the toast of the town: he met for roles in "Prometheus" and "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," but ended up going down more grounded routes, with parts in Ben Affleck's "Argo"; in Gus Van Sant's "Promised Land" with Matt Damon; in Lynn Shelton's "Touchy Feely"; and in Andrew Dominik's "Killing Them Softly," for which McNairy earned rave reviews at Cannes this morning (read ours right here). And clearly, he impressed his co-star in that film, Brad Pitt. The megastar is gearing up to produce and play a supporting role in "Twelve Years A Slave," directed by "Shame" helmer Steve McQueen, and according to Variety, he's bringing along McNairy, with the actor set to play a circus employee responsible for the kidnap of a free African-American man (to be played by the great Chiwetel Ejiofor), who ends up in slavery for the decade-and-a-bit of the title.

He's not the only new addition, either: Irish actress Ruth Negga ("Misfits," "Breakfast On Pluto") has also joined the cast, playing a runaway slave. The latest arrivals join Ejiofor, Pitt, McQueen's "Hunger" and "Shame" star Michael Fassbender, Adepero Oduye from "Pariah" and, as of yesterday, "There Will Be Blood" star Paul Dano, who'll play a brutal slave owner. The cast here just keeps getting more and more impressive, and in the hands of McQueen (who co-wrote the script with "Three Kings" co-writer John Ridley), it should be something very, very special. Filming starts at the end of next month, and we'll likely see this at Cannes or Venice in 2013 ahead of an Oscar-season release.

Big Congratulations to Moth Member Amanda Brooks for being cast in the film "The Canyons" directed by Paul Schrader & produced by Brent Easton Ellis starring Lindsay Lohan

Picture
Casting continues for "The Canyons," the upcoming feature film written by Bret Easton Ellis ("American Psycho," "Less Than Zero") and directed by Paul Schrader (director of "American Gigolo" and "Auto Focus," writer of "Raging Bull" and "Taxi Driver").

"The Canyons" is a contemporary L.A. noir about the dangers of sexual obsession and ambition—both personally and professionally—among a group of young people in their 20s, and how one chance meeting connected to the past unravels all of their lives, resulting in deceit, paranoia, cruel mind games, and ultimately violence.

The independent film, which raised nearly $160,000 on Kickstarter and continues to receive funding through other donations, is scheduled to shoot in Los Angeles July 9-Aug. 4.

Casting began in early March
, but the producers are now casting one additional role: Caitlin is a budding L.A. socialite in her 20s who is shallow, naive, and easily manipulated. She is beautiful, and she knows it. The movie promises to feature lots of graphic sex and nude scenes, but no nudity will be required for this role.

According to Ellis' Twitter account and the film's Facebook page, Lindsay Lohan will star as Tara opposite porn star James Deen as Christian. (Lohan's deal is reportedly still in flux, though, since the actress has expressed her concerns over the amount of sex and nudity required of her character.) Nolan Funk and Amanda Brooks have also joined the cast this week.
