Writer / Director's Note
_____ “If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him . . .”
My favorite word comes to mind whenever I think of this Buddhist saying. What?
When we face fear, face that which we believe we cannot do or cannot be done, I feel a light shines brightly, like a sunrise, revealing many things but often exposing a reflection of ourselves. We sometimes can see that part which maybe protecting us is actually hiding, or maybe even sleeping.
Nate: Why?
Stephen: I guess it forces you to see you can’t really hold on to anything . . . even your life.
Nate: But . . . it’s abuse.
Stephen: Strangling?
Nate: There are other things that can give you that?
Stephen: Yeah, I guess anything could.
Stephen accepts anything holds the potential to wake you up and yet he is fast asleep, deep within his own dream.
Balanced. I don’t feel like we celebrate or even really appreciate balance; artists, actors, musicians, athletes, politicians, trend setters - even killers, the ones we know of are the ones who risen above, went beyond. We look to the extremes. I don’t know why. I have this theatre, a daughter, friends, a divorce, an emigration and now I want to integrate of all the parts hoping that it will make me whole – balanced.
My dad drove me to a friend’s house one day. As we were arriving All The Lonely People by the Beatles was playing. I was born in a house that was previously owned by Pete Best’s mother and the four used to practice there when Silver was still in the name of their band. Sitting beside my father I had a moment. Everything in my 14 yr. old life connected. I cried and embarrassment pulled me back to where I thought I was. I got out, looked at my dad and said something such as “it’s like they’re singing my song. How did those four sing about things so much bigger than themselves?” My dad had a very neutral look on his face and said, “It’s special, right.” I don’t think he was talking about the song even if he thought he was. I think he was letting his son know that feeling awake to life, as I did at that moment, is it.
I can’t go on.
I’ll go on.
Thank you Beckett.
